Best HVAC brands and who makes them

Many HVAC brands are badges sold by a handful of manufacturer families, so the best HVAC brand question starts with who builds the unit and ends with who installs it. Below: the five families behind the top HVAC brands (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Daikin and Rheem), as each maker lists them, the refrigerant each moved to, and what their warranties pay when the system is registered on time, and when it is not.

Who makes which HVAC brands

A badge is a sales channel, not a factory. Carrier sells under Carrier, Bryant, Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Day & Night, Arcoaire, KeepRite, Airquest; Bryant's own footer reads "A Carrier Company". Trane Technologies lists Trane, American Standard, Ameristar, RunTru, OxBox. Lennox sells its own name, and its Allied Air arm sells Armstrong Air, AirEase, Ducane, Concord through distributors. Daikin completed its purchase of Goodman on 2012-11-01, and Ruud's site carries the Rheem Manufacturing Company copyright.

One recent change: Payne's own site now says the brand has transitioned to WeatherMaker by Carrier. Payne owners still reach their manuals and warranty documents there. York and its sister brands are not on these cards because we could not read a current parent-and-brand list on the owner's own pages.

Most reliable HVAC brands, and the Consumer Reports question

One widely read reliability rating comes from Consumer Reports. It rates central air brands for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction from surveys of its own members, and the brand scores are for its members, so we do not reproduce them here. Read them for what they are: a badge's average across many houses and many installers.

That last part outweighs the badge. ENERGY STAR's own bid checklist says more than half of new systems in US homes do not perform to their rated efficiency because of the installation, and that a poor install can cut performance by as much as 30%. A top-rated brand on an oversized, undercharged system with leaky ducts is a poor buy whatever the badge. Size the house first with the Manual J load calculator, then compare quotes on the same tonnage.

Air conditioner brands and central air conditioner brands: what really differs

Every brand sells against the same federal floor. A split central air conditioner must reach 13.4 SEER2 nationally, and 14.3 SEER2 for the smaller split units in the Southeast and Southwest. The makers sell tiers above that floor (Lennox's Merit, Elite and Signature lines in the warranty table below), so compare tiers at the same tonnage, not logos. The SEER2 guide explains the rating.

The real split between families is the refrigerant. New residential systems must use a refrigerant under 700 GWP, and the families went two ways:

Refrigerant in new residential equipment, by family
BrandRefrigerantGWP
Carrier (Puron Advance)R-454B466
TraneR-454B466
Lennox, ductedR-454B466
Lennox, ductlessR-32675
Daikin and GoodmanR-32675

R-454B is an A2L refrigerant, mildly flammable, and both new refrigerants are not cross-compatible with an existing R-410A system. So when only the outdoor half of an R-410A system fails, the brand question can turn into a whole-system question. The R-454B transition guide covers the service side, and heat pump vs air conditioner covers the other choice inside every brand's line.

HVAC brand warranties side by side

The long warranty a brand headlines is usually the registered one, and it covers parts, not labor. Miss the registration window and it drops back. Here are the makers' own terms:

Limited warranty terms by brand, before and after registration
Brand and tierRegister withinLate or unregistered partsRegistered partsOr parts + labor
Carrier (Consumer Choice)90 days5 yr10 yr5 yr + 3 yr
Trane (most products)60 days5 yr10 yrOptional, sold by the dealer
Lennox Merit and Elite60 days5 yr10 yr7 yr + 3 yr
Dave Lennox Signature60 days10 yr12 yr10 yr + 3 yr

Registration is a deadline, and it is short

Carrier gives 90 days and Trane and Lennox 60. Carrier's labor option needs a participating dealer, and Consumer Choice as a whole covers replacement installs only, not new construction. Lennox notes that in California, Florida, Georgia (installed from 2026-01-01), Quebec, and other places where the law bars a registration requirement, the parts term extends on its own; the labor option still has to be claimed within 60 days. Carrier's page carries the same exception: there the 10-year parts term applies automatically and can be switched to the labor option within 90 days. Rheem's warranty page asks owners to register to access warranty benefits and extend coverage.

None of these pays a contractor's labor by default. Ask every quote for its own labor warranty in writing, as the HVAC replacement cost guide recommends, and check which line items the AC replacement cost guide says move the price.

How to choose an HVAC brand

The checklist, in the order it matters

  1. The installer first: a room-by-room load calculation, written, before any model is named.
  2. An AHRI certificate for the exact indoor and outdoor pair. ENERGY STAR's checklist asks for one to document a matched system.
  3. Parts on the shelf: ask which supply house stocks the brand's compressors, boards and motors near you.
  4. The tier inside the brand: single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed, compared at the same tonnage.
  5. The refrigerant, and whether the line set is reused or replaced.
  6. Who registers the warranty, by what date, and a copy of the confirmation.
  7. The installer's labor warranty, in years, in writing.

Then size it yourself with the AC unit size calculator and read how to size an AC unit before the first visit, so a quote that skips the load calculation is easy to spot.

For contractors: choosing a line to carry

For a shop of one to ten trucks, the brand decision is a distribution decision. Allied Air sells its Armstrong Air, AirEase, Ducane, Concord badges through independent distributors, while Carrier ties its Consumer Choice labor option to participating dealers. Weigh three things: whether the local supply house stocks the parts, whether the program's labor coverage is worth its requirements, and whether your office can register every install inside the shortest window you carry. Put the make, model and serial on every ticket; the HVAC invoice template has the fields.
